#66-CRATS Kiosk

A local chart review showed suboptimal rates of colonoscopy prescribed to, or accepted by eligible patients. Personalized risk information provided before primary care appointments may increase the likelihood of colorectal cancer screening. We will use a novel waiting room kiosk to permit patients to self-rate risk immediately prior to primary care appointments on an internet-based risk assessment program.

Voogle is a proof of concept idea that combines a knowledge base and calls into the VistA system that activates a Remote Procedure Call (RPC), instantiates an object, or calls a function or File Manager Application Programmer Interface (API) depending on what is most appropriate. The results are returned as Extensible Markup Language (XML) in a web based data grid that is dynamically configured from the result set that is returned.

A.W.A.R.E. is a frontline alerts re-engineering tool developed for CPRS, which tracks and monitors follow-up actions and will identify certain critical lab and imaging test result alerts that lack timely follow up.

#150-Mental Health Kiosk

In some high priority illnesses, including mental health disorders, clinical data is often lacking in VistA and improving care has been challenging. Although self-assessment can generate this information, many patients cannot successfully use standard web interfaces. We have developed an audio, computer-assisted, patient self-assessment system, and used it to obtain accurate clinical assessments and provide patient education.

#182-CPRS Decision Support

This project is a part of the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) Grassroots initiative. Infobuttons are context-sensitive links embedded in the electronic medical record. They use context such as patient demographics, user role, or clinical setting to help anticipate the needs of the clinician. This project will insert Infobuttons into CPRS at several different points and use an Infobutton Manager to customize the way resources are delivered to clinicians.

#374-iHealth Adapter

VAi2 BAA innovation prototype delivers an integrated solution between VistA and the iPad/iPhone for accessing patient search, demographics, laboratory data, medications, allergies, appointments and problem list. It integrates a VistA provider’s clinic schedule and an administrative Outlook calendar all designed to enable new and exciting ways to visualize VistA data using the modern, high resolution graphics capabilities of iPhone/iPad devices.

The mVisum CCS system interfaces with the EKG Archive (GE Muse), medical image archive (VistA Imaging), and lab results archive (VistA Labs) through various interfaces. The system then makes the data available for review by physicians. It also alerts physicians of new lab data as and when available.

#527-Veterans Crisis Line On Prescription Bottle Caps

The Crisis Line Number on Prescription Bottles/Caps/Labels Innovation imprints the Veterans Crisis Line telephone number directly on the prescription bottle caps of the medications. Having the Veterans Crisis Line number imprinted directly on the prescription bottle caps may be a significant deterrent in preventing a suicide. Treatment could begin in a more timely manner thus avoiding deaths by overdose of prescription medications.

#541-Handsfree Bathrooms

The Hands Free Restrooms Innovation will design a hands free hand technology for restrooms shared by more than one person (patients, staff, and guests), to reduce the spread of microorganisms. The design would include: hands free water and soap dispensing, hands free paper towel dispensers, and hands free entry and exit from the restroom.

#588-Special Care Units/Dementia Care Units

This innovation developed new policies and procedures which include a detailed plan for Special Care Units/Dementia Care Units, by utilizing the members of the inter-disciplinary team. The plan includes consistent staffing, staffing ratios, therapeutic programming, design concepts, training, etc. It also sets guidelines with policies and procedures around design concepts, consistent staffing, therapeutic programming, dementia care training, and behavior management and enhances the therapeutic programming offered to the Veterans residing on the Special Care Unit/Dementia Care Unit to improve quality of life and patient satisfaction.
